How to Increase Somatic Awareness

Interoception is an important key to cultivating somatic awareness. Interoception is important because it supports us to be aware of what we sense on the inside of our bodies. When we can be aware of our inner senses, and accurately interpret their meaning, we have more capacity to tend to our needs, emotionally regulate, make clear decisions, and set boundaries. If we’ve experienced trauma or chronic stress in our lives, our interoceptive abilities may be compromised leading us to misinterpret inner sensations or not feel them at all. Thankfully, interoception is a skill we can practice, and here are some simple exercises to try.
